"A reference Pelton turbine design"
The designs of hydraulic turbines are usually close kept corporation secrets. Therefore, the possibility of innovation and co-operation between different academic institutions regarding a specific turbine geometry is difficult. For this reason, we aim to design a Pelton turbine, including a model, where all measurements, simulations and the design strategy are available for everyone. In this paper a new Pelton bucket design will be presented. This will be the first iteration of at least two intended to be produced during 2012-13 where the future designs will aim to counter some of the flow problems found in the previous iterations. The design modifications will be small so that the effects of the different changes are possible to quantify either by measurements or visualization techniques. Our measurements, simulations, design strategies and the geometry for the first design will be presented. The first iteration design strategy will be based on a philosophy to keep the relative velocity through the turbine bucket constant and to keep the geometry simple to ease analytical calculations on the flow.
